Demographics of a Magazine

Hello there, after making my preliminary magazine, there were things that I didn’t necessarily consider. There are multiple aspects that go into producing a magazine such as history, types, genres, design, content, layout, anatomy of page design, demographics, production, and market research. Each of these have a significant function that’s needed for a magazine. But for me to know how to apply it to my machine, I first have to know what it is and how it works. I will first start for with demographics.

Demographics are the statistical characteristics of human populations (such as age or income) used especially to identify markets. This is similar to target audience in a way because you’re going to make a magazine that caters to who you want it to however that may not always go the way you plan. You magazine might be made for middle aged black women but your demographics are showing that teenage black women are reading your magazine.

Magazines such as ebony and essence are catered towards middle-class black African Americans and its demographics mirror that also.

Magazines like Business insider are created for people who know how the economy works and business oriented peoples. Its demographics show mostly white men read those magazines. However that has more to do with society and why that group specifically knows more about making loads of money.

And this a graph comparing two different magazines, Newsweek and Time to the US population.

Sometimes you’re demographics will not match up with the US population because certain social groups are more inclined to read your magazine.
